Have you changed your internal fridge water filter but water isn’t coming through? Let us assist! Generally speaking, fridges that are plumbed into a water line to supply drinking water through your water dispenser are fitted with an auto-shut off valve. This means if there is no filter installed, the fridge will automatically shut off the water to the dispenser to avoid excessive leaking or use of the dispenser without a filter. With this- you don’t have to turn off your water supply to install a new filter.
With precaution in mind - we do see a lot of customers turning off the water supply prior to the installation of the new filter. When the water is turned off, and then the auto shut off valve engages; an air pocket is released into the fridge tubing, which causes increased pressure and can make it very difficult to lock the new filter into place.
The main cause for water not flowing through a filter after installation, is because there may be air caught somewhere in the water line to the fridge. To fix this follow the below steps.
1. Turn water supply back on (if it was turned off in installation process).
2. Install the old filter if it is available. If this has been thrown out, continue to step 3.
3. Hold a cup at the water dispenser and hold the dispense button for 1 - 2 minutes. The water may splutter out. This is the air being removed along with the water in the lines.
4. Without turning the water supply off (internal filters only), take the old filter out of the fridge and install your new filter.
5. Install new filter and run water through the filter until the water runs clear. The grey matter that may appear at first is just loose carbon, and is completely normal when installing a new filter.
Important Note: When your fridge is initially connected to the water supply, a pressure limiting valve should always be installed at the water outlet. Please refer to our article here for more information regarding pressure limiting valves for your fridge.
