How to change Samsung fridge filter

Samsung refrigerators are some of the most popular in Australia. Thanks to their wide range of features and designs, homeowners love their built-in functionality. The Samsung fridge filter provides your home with clean, fresh, filtered water and ice every day. Each Samsung water filter lasts for approximately six months, but some may run their course sooner due to frequent use or a particularly hard water supply.

When you've noticed the filter indicator light on your Samsung fridge light up, that means it is time for you to replace your old filter with a new one. Finding the right type of water filter for your Samsung fridge, let alone installing it, can feel overwhelming, but it can be done in a few easy steps.

Where Is the Water Filter on My Samsung Fridge?

The first thing you will have to do before buying a new Samsung water filter is to identify what model you have. This makes it possible for you to buy the right replacement. At Discount Fridge Filters, we help customers find the right match for their fridges based on their model number.

Other brands can replace the filter in a Samsung fridge and work just as well, but you have to know your fridge model in order to find compatible fridge filters. This guarantees only the best quality of filtration for you and your family.

You can review the video below to easily identify the model number of your Samsung water filter.

The water filter location in a Samsung refrigerator differs depending on the fridge model. There are three potential places for your water filter to be located. If you have a French door model, the water filter location is likely to be between the crisper doors in the refrigerator compartment.

In other models, you will find the water filter will be on the top right interior or at the rear of the fridge. If you are unable to find the location of your water filter or identify your fridge model number, you can always contact us at Discount Fridge Filters for assistance.

Do You Have To Turn Water Off To Change Your Samsung Refrigerator Filter?

Samsung fridges with internal filters have an auto shut off valve, so you don’t need to shut the water off to swap out the filter. We do not recommend shutting off the water because customers sometimes have installation issues because they have shut off the water causing air locks etc. so when they turn the water supply back on, they get sputtering water or no water comes out at all.

However, Samsung fridges with external filters almost always have to have the water shut off before the filters are swapped out or changed over. This is generally because they will be an inline filter with no auto shut off valve – just tubing at either end connected directly to the water mains. If this is the filter you require, shutting off the water supply is a very important step when changing your filter to ensure you don't have a flood of water from this connection.

Shutting off water to a Samsung fridge with an internal filter may only be necessary when high water pressure is preventing the filter from being removed or re-installed, however, releasing pressure by dispensing some water is almost always a better option.

How To Change An Internal Water Filter on a Samsung Refrigerator

1. Find the water filter location in your refrigerator.

2. Lift the protective lid on the old filter, if your filter type has one, and turn it counter-clockwise to remove. If it is hard to lift, there could be built-up pressure; dispense some water and try to loosen it before pulling again.

3. Remove your new filter from its packaging and its protective cap.

4. Push the new filter into place and turn it clockwise until its lock symbol is aligned with the arrow.

5. Replace the filter lid, if your filter type has one, and run several litres of water to ensure it is properly filtered and air is flushed out of the line. This ensures no leak occurs later.

6. Reset the filter indicator light on your fridge.

To reset the filter light on your Samsung refrigerator, press and hold the "Ice Type" or "Moisture Control" and Child Lock buttons for 3 seconds. The indicator light should reset to green. Avoid holding the buttons for too long as this will cause the process to start again; you will have to release all of the buttons and hold them again until the light turns green.

You can also consult your Samsung fridge user manual for detailed instructions on how to replace the water filter and reset the indicator light.

How To Change An External Water Filter on a Samsung Refrigerator

1. Find isolation valve which will be located somewhere on the water supply line to the fridge. Turn it off. To depressurise the system draw a large glass of water from the water outlet at the fridge.

2. Have a bucket and towel ready as there will be a small spillage of water during this process. Remove the old filter by depressing the locking collar at each end of the filter with your thumb nail (or similar) and at the same time pull out the water supply line. Discard the old filter. You can use your fingers or a firm edged object to hold down the locking collar, this will allow the hose to easily slide out.

3. Cut the plastic tube very straight to get rid of any jagged edges caused by the old filter. We recommend to use something sharp like a stanley knife. This will reduce the risk of leaking from the tube.

4. Rinse water through your new filter before it is installed. To do this you can hold your filter under a tap and run the water straight into a sink, or you can submerge the filter into a bucket or container of water. This will remove any loose carbon and activate the carbon block for optimal filtration.

5. Take the new filter, making sure the flow direction is correct and insert the inlet side only, the line will go in approx 5 – 10mm and you will fully install into place.

6. Placing the filter in the bucket, turn on the water supply and allow about 5 litres of water to flow through the filter and into the bucket. This will remove any loose carbon. Turn off the water supply and connect the line that feeds into the fridge. Turn on the water supply and run approx 2 litres through the system.

7. Complete the replacement date sticker and place in a visible area inside the fridge door.

Can I Run My Samsung Refrigerator Without the Water Filter?

Water filters are made to remove contaminants like lead, mercury, chlorine and more from your drinking water and ice. Most Samsung fridges can still function without a water filter installed. While rotary valves in the fridge can bypass the water filter and give you water without one installed, this does not mean you should continue to use your Samsung refrigerator without a water filter.

We believe that everyone deserves the cleanest, purest water in their homes. Although you may not know how to replace your water filter at first, it is an easy process to learn that not only improves the quality of your drinking water and ice but protects your fridge as well. If you do not replace your old filter after 6 months, you can experience mineral build-up that causes your fridge to have costly breakdowns. You may also notice that your water and ice tastes strange or has a strange odour.
