If you've ever gone to replace your fridge water filter and hit a wall of confusing jargon like OEM, aftermarket, compatible, genuine, NSF-certified… you're not alone.
Your fridge filter works hard stripping chlorine, sediment, and other impurities from your water, and eventually it wears out after about 6–12 months.
So, what should you replace it with? That's where the OEM vs. aftermarket decision comes in. We’ve put together a complete guide to help you understand and shop with confidence.
OEM vs. Aftermarket: What's the real difference?
OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer, these are also referred to as “genuine”. These are filters sold under the same brand name as your fridge. So Samsung-branded filters for a Samsung fridge.
Aftermarket filters are made by independent manufacturers to fit all the same technical specifications, but without the brand name. This is why most aftermarket filters are often cheaper, because you aren’t paying for the brand price tag. These are sometimes referred to as “non-genuine”. For perspective on their similarity, OEM and aftermarket filters are sometimes made in the very same factories.
A fridge doesn't "know" or care what logo is printed on your filter. What matters is whether the filter matches the required specifications to suit your fridge.
Think of it like medication at a pharmacy, generic paracetamol relieves your headache just as effectively as the big brand names.
Will non-genuine void my warranty?
This is, by far, the most common concern we hear. Here's what the law actually says.
Under the Australian Consumer Law (Competition and Consumer Act 2010), consumers have automatic legal protections that apply regardless of what a warranty card says. Section 64 of the ACL makes it unlawful for a manufacturer or supplier to impose conditions that exclude or modify these guarantees. In practice, this means:
- A statement like "you must only use [Brand X] filters or your warranty is void" isn’t legally enforceable in Australia.
- If a manufacturer wants to reject a warranty claim because of an aftermarket filter, they must prove that the aftermarket product directly caused the fault. The burden of proof sits with them, not with you.
- Simply having used a compatible non-genuine filter is not, on its own, a valid reason to deny a warranty claim.
If a filter is genuinely compatible and meets the correct specifications to suit your fridge, using it does not put your warranty at risk.
Certifications explained
Not all aftermarket filters are created equal. The most important thing you can do as a buyer is to understand the different certifications and manufacturing requirements that separate a well-made filter from a poorly made one.
Several recognised bodies set out detailed technical requirements for water filtration products.
Here are the standards to look out for when it comes to fridge filter manufacturing:

NSF International is generally considered the global benchmark for setting water filter requirements, its standards are detailed, rigorous, and built around performance testing.
At Fridge Filters Australia, every filter we stock is manufactured in line with these strict requirements.
The manufacturing quality behind a filter is what determines whether it works or not, and that's exactly why we choose to build our range in line with the highest internationally recognised standard.
The benefits of buying from an Australian company
Where you buy your filter from matters just as much as what you buy. Purchasing from an Australian-registered company means you're protected by the Australian Consumer Law, with a real business legally accountable if something goes wrong.
The same isn't always guaranteed with overseas sellers on global marketplaces, where listings can be hard to verify, counterfeits are harder to spot, and disputes can be slow or impossible to resolve. Buying locally means buying from a business that's legally accountable and easily contactable.
Easy buying checklist
A practical checklist for identifying a properly manufactured filter:
- Manufactured in line with verifiable NSF, WaterMark, or equivalent certification
- Clearly states which appliance models it's compatible with
- Has accessible support with a human customer support team
- Sold by a reputable, Australian-registered supplier
- Generous return policy
- Doesn't make “too good to be true” claims
The takeaway
A brand name label does not determine the quality of your fridge filter.
An aftermarket or “non-genuine” filter that fits your fridge's specifications, is made in line with high-standard certification, and is backed by a reputable Australian company will perform just as effectively as an OEM/genuine filter.
Your warranty remains protected by law when you use a compatible, correctly specified product.
At Fridge Filters Australia, our wide range of filters are made in line with strict NSF requirements and are individually quality tested, meaning your family gets cleaner, better-tasting water without the brand-name price tag.
