Filter not Lasting? We can help!

Depending on your specific home water filtration system, it is recommended that you change your water filter every 6 to 12 months. However, some customers may encounter unique circumstances which can impact water quality and may result in an early filter change. These circumstances may include (but are not limited to):

  • Disturbances (Construction, earth movements etc)
  • Weather (Rain, drought, etc)
  • Dam water levels
  • Pollution
  • Location

These variables can be caused by earth movements including construction in the area, or heavy rainfall. Rain, drought and flash flooding events can have impacts on water quality, in terms of dam levels and the stirring of sediment at the bottom of the dams. This is especially prevalent in circumstances where the dam levels are low. Pollution in the air impacts water quality too, so weather events like bushfires also play a massive part in the amount of sediment in your water.

Let’s drill down a little further on the point of construction. Have you noticed your water quality has changed or your filter is blocked sooner while there may be roadworks or renovations in the area? This can be caused by heavy machinery creating vibrations in the water pipes, which disrupts the sediment and means the filter can start becoming less effective prior to your replacement time frame. If the water from your filter is coming out slowly, it is a good indicator that it’s time to replace it. The positive is that if the filter has slowed, we know it is doing its job removing the contaminants.

With that being said, excess sediment may just come down to where you live. For example, some areas of Victoria contain high levels of sediment, which can lead to filters blocking prematurely. When we are trying to combat larger particles of contaminants, the pockets of the filter that capture the contaminants are filled up sooner.

If you are consistently changing your filter early, we do have a system to assist and allow you to get the 6 months out of your fridge filter. We recommend implementing a sediment filter in these instances - so that the sediment filter can filter out the larger particles, whilst your fridge filter can focus on its job removing the smaller contaminants like herbicides, pesticides and chlorine. The BFFRSED is a common sediment filter used as it's easy to install and lasts 12 months, so you only need to change it once for every 2 fridge filters used. The push-fit connections allow for a very quick and simple filter change. Check out our helpful video on how to change your inline sediment filter - click here.
